Universal Health Coverage Day 12/12/2015

‘Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – Definition by WHO on health.

New global coalition of more than 500 leading health and development organizations worldwide under the guidance of WHO is urging governments to accelerate reforms that ensure everyone, everywhere, can access quality health services without being forced into poverty. The coalition emphasises the importance of universal access to health services for saving lives, ending extreme poverty, building resilience against the health effects of climate change and ending deadly epidemics such as Ebola.

Many of the health issues that threaten human life is man-made. New viruses and organisms with high resistance to antibiotics create epidemics and eats away major portion of government health care funds. Human body has become less resistant with low immune functions. Modern fast life, stress and food habits contaminated with chemicals and pollutants play in vital role in the reduced immune functions.

A paradigm shift in spending of government funds in preventive health care is needed at this juncture. Along with inoculation programs and efforts to improve the public hygiene especially in third world countries, a focus on spreading the benefits of Yoga and Ayurveda in preventive health care has to be promoted.

Ayurveda explains about good health practises in daily as well as seasonal climates to prevent diseases. The DINA CHARYA and RITHU CHARYA explained by Ayurvedic texts are very relevant and universally accepted. Do’s and Don’ts in daily life with special attributes physical as well as mental health can prepare our body to fight better to such organisms and conditions.

There are many harmless herbal medicines that can work as antioxidants and immune boosters which are cheap, environment friendly and purely natural. These can be prepared out of ingredients available in one’s own habitat. One such example is Turmeric (commonly called as Haldi in Hindi and Botanical name; Curcuma Longa). Regular usage of raw turmeric boiled in water can prevent virus attacks and can improve immune function. Latest research claim that turmeric has the capacity to prevent cancer in human beings.

Yoga and meditation is proven to improve body functions and reduce stress. Regular practise of Yoga can regulate metabolism and prevent many auto immune diseases. Yoga improves and corrects impaired metabolism and strengthens our system to prevent diseases.
